Volunteering at Refugee Action Kingston
Do you want to support refugees and asylum seekers in the UK?
Do you have some free time?
Do you want to learn new skills and meet new friends?
Volunteers are involved in many different activities in R.A.K and are vital to the work that we do. We usually have the following volunteer opportunities available:
- Learning Centres - we run two weekly learning centres on a Monday and a Thursday. Volunteers help generally, teach English on an informal basis, assist with the activities hour, teach IT, prepare food, welcome and chat with refugees.
- Mentoring - work alongside a refugee looking for employment providing support and encouragement. Mentors and mentees usually meet weekly or fortnightly and agree a mutually convenient time and place.
- Befriending - meet up with a refugee on a regular basis to offer support and a chat.
- Summer Playscheme and Young People's Project - work alongside staff to provide a wide range of fun activities for refugee children and young people for 3 weeks in the summer.
- Clothing Project - help to sort donated clothing and distribute it to refugees, every 3 months or so, on a Saturday.
We usually ask volunteers to commit to a mimimum of 3 months. Volunteers will need to fill in an application form, provide 2 referees and then attend an informal interview to see whether we have a suitable placement.
We provide our own training, access to some external training, on-going support, volunteer meetings and socials!
