For children and young people

At Refugee Action Kingston, we offer programmes and services dedicated to supporting the children of refugees and asylum seekers in Kingston as well as unaccompanied children. We want them to feel welcome in the community and confident at school. Our team of qualified teachers are supported by a team of volunteers and peer mentors who are fully DBS checked and have attended our in-house training.

We offer a safe place for children, as well as unaccompanied children

Bright Futures After School Club

Bright Futures After School club welcomes children and young people from 5-16 years old every week on Wednesday from 4 - 6pm.

Teachers, peer mentors and volunteer tutors offer help with homework and academic support with English and Maths.

The club provides a healthy snack, games and crafts.  We work with community partners to offer extra curricular activities in music, art and sport.  The club encourages children to make friends from different backgrounds and schools. It is a safe place to be and parents and staff are present throughout each session.

Parents take part in their own English lesson and are helped to become familiar with the British school system: what is taught, how it is taught, and the transition to secondary school or college. We support parents to engage with their children’s schools and get involved with their child's learning. We may also be able to provide children with a laptop, thanks to an on-going partnership with Keep Kids Connected.

Bright Futures Supplementary School

Bright Futures Supplementary School is a weekly or twice weekly session for children and young people waiting for a school or college place. We support students through the admissions process and work to prepare them for the start of their school or college career in the UK.

We organise positive educational experiences, days out, local visits and celebrations. In 2023, these included a family trip to Kew Gardens, nature hikes in Richmond Park, and visits to the Science Museum, Santa’s Grotto and the bowling alley.

Meet Michael* - Refugee Action Kingston Stories

Michael arrived in the UK in the summer of 2020. In the short time he has been here he has achieved so much. With little English, he started school in Year 10 and had the challenge of preparing for GCSEs. He is a diligent and committed student who worked extremely hard to bridge the gap both in terms of subject matter and language. He was supported by RAK through access to summer FUEL activities, and then, once it resumed after the pandemic, at the weekly after school and homework club where he could get one on one help with his subjects. The recreational part of the session allowed him to gain in confidence socially and practise his spoken English. He has also benefitted from one on one  weekly online tuition with one of RAK’s volunteer maths tutors.

After his GCSE successes, he went on to study for A levels and Btecs. As well as continuing to support him in his academic studies, RAK helped him to look at work experience options, prepare his personal statement, hone his interview skills and prepare for IELTs exams. We helped with stationery supplies, study guides and other school equipment like scientific calculators and revision cards, also grants for uniform, and a business suit for 6th form.

He continued to gain in confidence whilst attending lots of social events organised by RAK – Kew gardens, bike across cultures, Christmas parties, Richmond park, theatre trips. We have also facilitated him joining a local cricket club.

Having achieved some great results at A level and Btec, he is studying a full time 4 year course at university and is coming back to After school club to be a volunteer peer mentor.
